You can't make music without paying money, you can't live off zero dollars, so you need to make money, and if you're doing music full time, you need to make money at it.
The key is to actually create something on your own terms and see if people want to buy it, if not, well, you have no business selling it, if so, then you have the right to sell it to people.
But never EVER make something specifically to be sold. That's my only beef. And by sold I also mean to get laid, or just plain get attention.

well, you honestly don't need any money to make music. so i disagree with you, joe. technically, you could sit down with an old acoustic guitar and play your heart out, which wouldn't cost you a dime. while music (from a business sense) is all about creating a potentially popular product, i think you can still sell your material while retaining all of your integrity. you just won't reach a very wide audience (depending on your particular sound.)

it doesn't cost money to beat on pots and pans either. it DOES cost money to play what you WANT to play though. which, usually ends up costing money for most people. i.e. gibson sg

that depends on the person, doesn't it. i might want to play my gibson. john smith, on the other hand, might want to play with pots and pans. i mean, chris and what's his face (bass and vocals of not yet a hero) are completely content with playing an acoustic guitar and putting the computer microphone recordings on the internet. so, it really all comes down to a matter of preference.
